I love how Chesterton started his autobiography. Here's the first line:
"Bowing down in blind credulity, as is my custom, before mere authority and the tradition of the elders, superstitiously swallowing a story I could not test at the time by experiment or private judgment, I am firmly of the opinion that I was born on the 29th of May, 1874, on Campden Hill, Kensington..."

yeahhhh.... see that kind of quote is why I find ol' Gilbert a touch difficult to get through.

Yeah, it's a bit of a run-on sentence (deliberately), but it's so doggone funny.
I love the way he pokes at the POV that says "I distrust tradition," with a combination of self-deprecating humor and the subtle observation that we ALL "bow down in blind credulity" when it comes to the facts of our own birth. And he does it right out of the gate - line #1.
He makes me laugh.
